The May 1st match ended in a 2-2 draw at Câmara de Lobos Stadium, in an intense clash against ADRC “Os Xavelhas” “A,” as part of the 18th round of the Regional Division of Honor Championship.

More than just the point earned, what stands out is the image of a competitive, supportive, and increasingly united team, with a top-notch second half and a performance that confirms the group’s strength in this final stretch.

A highly demanding game

The match got off to a rough start for our team, which conceded a goal in the 15th minute and was punished again in the 33rd, in a first half where the opponent made better use of counterattacks and managed to break down our defense.

Even so, 1.º de Maio showed character and never lost their grip on the game, even in the face of a demanding atmosphere and a very competitive opponent.

The answer came after 30 minutes, courtesy of Afonso Silva, who pulled one back and put the team back in contention.

That goal carried both emotional and tactical significance, because it restored the team’s confidence and showed that they knew how to find ways to break down the opposition.

A strong second half

While the first half ended with the team trailing, the second half saw CD 1.º de Maio play at their best. The team stepped up their performance, established a stronger presence in midfield, and pressed much closer to the opponent’s goal, displaying better ball movement and improved positioning.

It was in this context that Dinarte Gois scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 80th minute, a moment that rewarded the team’s persistence, commitment, and belief. Until the very end, 1.º de Maio sought a comeback and even created two clear chances to make it 2-3, reinforcing the feeling that the final score fell short of what the second half produced.

Tactical awareness and teamwork

This draw is also notable for the way the team responded to the challenges of the match. There were two red cards for each side in a game marked by disciplinary decisions and heightened emotions, but 1.º de Maio remained focused and competitive.

When everyone is working toward the same goal

In a senior team, true strength emerges when everyone works toward the same goal: protecting teammates, closing down spaces, covering for mistakes on the flanks, and staying focused on the team’s collective play even under pressure.

This mindset yields very clear cognitive and psychological benefits on the field, because it reduces the fear of failure, improves the ability to read tense moments, and speeds up decision-making; when each player knows they are not alone, the brain responds with greater clarity, the body reacts with more confidence, and the team gains the composure to withstand chaos and turn difficult moments into opportunities for growth.

Standings and the final stretch

The current standings show a very tight race, with several teams separated by just a few points and every matchday capable of changing the order of the table. CD 1.º de Maio remains in 9th place, with 20 points from 18 games, and heads into the next four matchdays with 12 points up for grabs and the need to continue earning points to finish the season with dignity and ambition.

The upcoming fixtures are clear: CF Caniçal at home, followed by an away match against CD Nacional, another home game against CF Andorinha, and finally, a visit to SC Santacruzense. These four matches demand total focus, because every point could make a difference in the final standings.

Statement by João Diogo (Coach of CD 1º de Maio)

We gained 1 point instead of losing 2

“It wasan evenly matched game, though not always played well. We started off strong, but the first time the opponent reached our goal, they scored! We reacted immediately and tied the game, but there wasn’t even time to celebrate: we let them take a 2-1 lead, which was the score at halftime. In the second half, we played better than in the first and, as a result, got much closer to the opponent’s goal. Xavelhas stayed compact the whole time, trying to break on the counterattack. We tied the game and even had two more clear chances where we could have made it 2-3. The tie ends up being an acceptable result, and unlike the last two games, today we earned 1 point instead of losing 2!”

It was a game with two red cards for each side. An outsider might think it was a rough, physical match, but that wasn’t the case. In my opinion, the red cards were a bit excessive—both for us and for our opponents. I don’t want to talk about the refereeing or say they were wrong; I just think that four red cards spoiled what could have been a great game.

“I want to congratulate my players, because in the second half we were true warriors! With this attitude, we’re much closer to achieving our goals.”
